Game Dev Log #2: NOW WITH "GAME"
Vampire The Taskerade » Devlog
Hey hey hey,
SO it's been a month since our last update. Progress has been made on Vampire the Taskerade! Of note
- I completed a draft of part of the story of Vampire the Taskerade in Twine. It's basic. It's short! It's most meant to show
- the general tone I am going for, in terms of story. It's a bit wordier than I think it will be in RPG Maker. Sometimes wordy can be funny in certain types of game play. Sometimes people just skip through it and it's just annoying. It's a balance. It's something I'll have to play around with as I draft and design, etc.
- Intended mechanics. Twine can do a lot of things! But it can't do everything. I also don't have the bandwidth at the moment to learn Twine and RPGMaker MZ so instead of learning how to do variables and what not, I just wrote about them. Below hyperlink/choices in some lexia are notes that expand on ideas I have for what things might look like on the back end. This gives me an idea on things i need to focus on learning how to do and lets you know what the Final(ish...we all know how it goes) product might look like.
- I got more hours and responsibilities at my paycheck job! This is good because it means
- I can stop looking for more work. Looking for work is work you don't get paid for. Worrying takes energy I don't have. I can focus on my work during work hours and VtT and other projects (and regular degular life) during non-work hours. It's honestly perfect for me.
- I...have more money to spend on VtT. I had some money saved for art assets. But now I have a steadier, regular income so I can regularly put money into VtT. In the past I did crowdfunding for projects and I am trying to not have to do that again. I'm not going to get into why right now because it's a moot point, it's not happening. MONEY. I HAVE SOME. This will more than likely go into ART ASSETS. If you have never fucked around with RPGMaker MZ, let me tell you, it does not have the correct assets to make a game set in an office building. The "urban" assets are kind of meh. It has some cool ones, do not get me wrong but it's not its strong point. I can also potentially spend this money to have people smarter than me code (parts of) the game. This is exciting because it means the game is not limited by what I can learn. I do want to learn, and I learn by wanting to do something. But I am also fine with knowing how a concept works and having someone else do it, I don't need to make a game with just my name in the credits.
- I think I have to update more regularly about the game. Monthly is a minimum. It is hard to build hype monthly. I have (as of the time I am typing this) 21 followers on itch. I have 41 followers and 2 supporters on ko-fi. I sometimes want to punch myself for not making one final newsletter post to the over 3,000 people I had on my old Mailchimp in an attempt to get some of them to follow me elsewhere. But the truth is, only a small percentage of fans will follow you to another platform; this percentage is even smaller if the medium is changing. I'm lucky enough to have people in my life who are interested in everything I do. But while I know Vampire the Taskerade isn't gonna be fun for everyone, I know not everyone who would like it knows that it is being worked on. I've barely said anything about it! I gotta talk about it more. So I am going to try and do more frequent updates. They'll be about VtT and project management and what now.
So this is the update! As well as the FREAKING GAME VERY PROTO PROTOTYPE. If you play it, let me know what you are interested in hearing more about, what you wanna see, questions you have, warnings of possible blockers. Before I f'real sign off, I want to give a quick shoutout to treelet, who looked at the draft and has some games available on itch that you should check out. We love a browser game, we love a "small" game with big feels. They're awesome!
So thassit! Hope you enjoy what I have so far and are getting psyched!
